Carpenter Trades Youth is a paid summer work experience and a Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program, registered with Oregon’s Bureau of Labor & Industries. CTY is an opportunity for high school juniors (rising seniors) who live in Clackamas, Clark, Columbia, Multnomah and Washington counties. Selected students are employed by a General Contractor on a commercial building project in the Portland metro area for 8 weeks.
Like the Union Carpenters Apprenticeship program, this annual summer program combines classroom instruction at PNCI’s Portland campus with paid On-the-Job Training at a construction site. Pre-Apprentices participate in eight days of training at PNCI with a focus on safety, identifying and using tools, ergonomic material handling, blueprint reading, concrete forms, and employer expectations. Interns earn at least $15.00 per hour over the eight week experience.
Preference is given to juniors enrolled in CTE construction-related classes at their school, but others are welcome to apply. Successful applicants are physically fit, have good attendance at school, are interested in a construction career, have a positive attitude, and are drug and alcohol free. Employers conduct pre-employment and random drug testing. Must have reliable transportation.

HISTORY
Originally known as the Summer Construction Camp, the Carpenter Trades Youth Internship became a state-recognized Registered Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program (RPATP) in 2023. It is a continuation of the partnership between the Associated General Contractors, the General & Concrete Contractors Association, the Northwest Carpenters Union and the Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute. Together, we’ve introduced more than 150 young people to the trades since the summer of 2006.

WHAT ABOUT SENIORS?
If you are 18 years old, you may apply directly for one of PNCI’s five apprenticeship programs. To be a competitive candidate, you might consider the Job Corps UBC Carpentry programs or a community-based pre-apprenticeship program in your area. Another option is PNCI’s free, three-week pre-apprenticeship program, Carpenter Trades Preparation (CTP). The September CTP class is designed for 18-24 year-olds.
